BERNARD LOWY FUND FOR THE STUDY OF TROPICAL BOTANY
IN LATIN AMERICA Applications are invited for research support
from the Bernard Lowy Fund for the study of tropical botany in Latin America.
The family and friends of the late Bernard Lowy, tropical mycologist and
professor at Louisiana State University from 1957 until his death in 1992,
established the Lowy Fund in recognition of his research efforts in the
Neotropics and his concern for the conservation of tropical ecosystems.
The Lowy Fund will provide funding of up to $1000 for travel and related
expenses for research in diverse aspects of tropical botany in Latin America.
Applicants must either be studying or working at a university or research
organization in Latin America or in plant biology at LSU. In addition
previous students from LSU who received a doctoral degree in plant biology
at LSU at Baton Rouge are eligble . Support for applicants from Latin American
institutions is for travel and living expenses related to reasearch conducted
at LSU. An LSU Plant Biology faculty member acts as sponsor for off

Edgerton Award Plant biology graduate students
in their last semester (or students who have completed their degree since
the last competition) are eligible. Research accomplishments are
honored.
William Gates Award Award for graduate students for outstanding teaching in the Introductory
Zoology Laboratory (BIOL 1509).
W.J. Luke Award All plant biology graduate students are eligible for this award honoring
outstanding teaching.
McDANIEL TRAVEL AWARD SEMINAR Applications
are now requested for the McDaniel Travel Award covering the period from
July to December, 1999. This is a competitive award and is intended to
defray the costs of graduate student travel to conferences. Awards
range from $300 - $1000 and are presented semi-annually. Students, please
apply with: (a) A cover letter giving your current status at the
university, and an explanation of the importance of the conference to your
career; (b) LSU transcripts (we accept photocopies); (c) your
C.V.; (d) a one page explanation of your proposed talk and it's scientific
significance (an extended abstract is fine); and (e) a budget with
photocopies from the conference materials showing prices. (f)
A one-page letter from your major professor singing your many praises should

Freshman Biology Program Award Award for outstanding teaching performance in the Freshman Biology
Program (BIOL 1005 or 1208). Open to any graduate TA in the Department
of Biological Sciences.
Chang/Younathan Award All biochemistry graduate students are eligible for this award honoring
outstanding teaching.
Outstanding Senior Award: Research
and Academic Achievement All seniors in the Department of Biological Sciences are eligible for
this award based on undergraduate academic achievement and notable research
accomplishments. Nominations from research mentors are sought.
